A young girl had cancer. She wanted to meet Taylor Swift. Little did she know that Taylor Swift is an avid #reader #indeed.
Young Delaney Clements was diagnosed at age 8 with cancer. Now at age 13, she’s fought this disease like a champ. Her strength of character is an amazing story in and of itself. Not only has she been battling with a crushing disease, but she has done it in style. Delaney has helped raise awareness for the rare cancer type she has, neuroblastoma. She is the face of Delaney Donates, a non profit for those who suffer from neuroblastoma. She in fact is so loved that she appeared on the Today Show because a close friend, Kamryn Renfro, shaved her head in solidarity and got pulled out of school!
Many people’s lives have been touched by this brave, wonderful Colorado native.
Which brings us to this year.
This Christmas, while other people were spreading holiday cheer on Facebook with invites and parties and presents and sweets, her mother, Wendy Campbell, had a sad announcement to share: Delaney’s cancer had spread to her brain.
Stage four cancer meant that Delaney Clements’ home would become a hospice.
This could have been the end of the story.
But remember: this is a very beloved, brave little girl.
Delaney was known – especially by friends and family on Instagram – as a Swiftie, a Taylor Swift fan. The community, knowing this, took up a baton online and spread it around. A hashtag went throughout the community #DelaneyMeetTaylor, which is how Taylor Swift met this sweet girl.
And wouldn’t you know it, you don’t have to ask Taylor Swift twice.
Taylor Swift is known for her big heart – she’s donated $50,000 to an 11 year old with leukemia and has been an avid supporter of UNICEF, PETA, and the Red Cross.
So, it should come as no shock that the warm-hearted pop singer jumped on a plane and surprised Delaney with a visit in her hometown!
The pair had a great time, taking tons of selfies that were posted to both Delaney’s account as well as Taylor’s own! It was exactly what Delaney wanted – a visit from her favorite singer.
Warm wishes and a happy New Year to all!
