Fitbit Predicts Bun in the Oven for One Reddit User

One of the most popular gifts given or received this past holiday season appears to have a new purpose. The Fitbit, a wearable, wireless activity tracker and steps counter, gave one Reddit user the surprise of his life.

Concerned that his wife’s Fitbit had not been working properly, a man with the handle YoungPTone took to Reddit in a bid to find answers.

“My wife’s fitbit is showing her heartbeat being consistently high over the last few days,” he explains. “Two days ago, a somewhat normal day, she logged 10 hours in the fat burning zone, which I would think to be impossible based on her activity level.”

The user’s main concern was that the device was not functioning properly, but he notes that the measurement of his wife’s burned calories seemed accurate, which would go against his theory that the Fitbit was malfunctioning.

“I would imagine if she was in the fat burning zone she would burn a ton of calories,” he continued, “so its not lining up.”

“Im not sure if something is wrong with the sensor,” he added. “Is there a way to reset or recalibrate the device? I’d like to try that before I contact customer service about a possible replacement.”

While the man’s concern is valid, it turns out that he was wrong about the Fitbit device. Though he did not know it at the time, his wife’s Fitbit was in fact working properly.

One sharp commenter provided a calculated theory.

“Has she experienced anything really stressful in the last few days,” Reddit user Thatwasunpleasant wonders, “or is it a possibility she is pregnant?”

Could YoungPtone’s wife possibly have been pregnant?

The commenter admittedly was not a medical professional or a doctor. However, she explains she had a similar experience.

“I’m pregnant and it makes me physically connected to all other pregnant women through the mysteries of the interwebs,” she joked. “Or I posted earlier this week a picture of how my resting heart rate was affected by becoming pregnant, as demonstrated by my Fitbit’s heart rate tracker. Definitely one or the other.”

It turns out Thatwasunpleasant was one hundred percent correct. YoungPTone’s wife was indeed pregnant. “I’m going to be a dad!” YoungPTone exclaimed in a comment.

Regarding Thatwasunpleasant’s Fitbit pregnancy prediction, Reddit user dianalau commented, “Are you from the future? Did you travel back in time to tell OP he was having a kid in the most subtle way?”

The Reddit post quickly went viral and has drawn 705 comments to date. It has been 97 percent up-voted on Reddit in only a few days.

The Fitbit has become a trendy physical fitness device since the company introduced its first line of devices in 2007. Its ability to connect with other mobile devices (such as smart phones and tablets) has made it very popular for health conscious individuals. The product line includes the Fitbit Tracker, Fitbit Ultra, Fitbit One, Fitbit Zip, and Fitbit Flex, among others. In 2015 the company went public.

The most popular product by far is the Fitbit Tracker. The Fitbit Tracker is a device that senses a user’s movement, kind of like a Wii remote. The device tracks a person’s total steps taken and calculates distances walked, how many calories burned, floors climbed, and duration of activity, as well as intensity.

Meanwhile, the Fitbit Flex can be worn on the wrist, is designed to track movement 24 hours a day and includes sleep tracking data.

The Fitbit Charge HR is a wrist-worn device that calculates calories burned and monitors a user’s heart rate. Or in some cases, predicts pregnancy.
